Tom Lark Unveils Single / Video 'Dumb Luck'

A stroke of self-made fortune has hit “sunburnt psychedelic folk” artist Tom Lark (Shannon Fowler), who’s just dropped his latest single ‘Dumb Luck’ from the open skies. This marks his first song release since his Taite Music Prize and Aotearoa Music Awards nominated album Brave Star (certainly one of my favourites from last year). With delicious and surprising sounds that got an audible “Ooh!” from me, plus a straightforward yet expressive solo as characteristic, ‘Dumb Luck’ further shows Fowler’s strength as a captivating storyteller who revels in acoustic foundations beneath hazier lead guitar.

The Tāmaki Makaurau-based artist will play a UK tour fundraiser at the Wine Cellar on May 9th to help his travels following his performance at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton. Expect a full Tom Lark trio comprised of James McDonald (Beachware) and drummer James Dansey (Thee Golden Geese), with opener Paul Cathro (Ha The Unclear, alizarin lizard) at the iconic K Road venue. “When I began writing ‘Dumb Luck’ I was thinking a lot about perseverance but also how funny ‘dumb luck’ is as a phrase. Despite hard work, sometimes things don’t pay off and other times things work out in total naiveté, for no other reason than some weird cosmic alignment. That said, I don’t really subscribe to the idea of ‘dumb luck’. Instead perhaps being ‘lucky’ is the ability to make the best of the circumstances presenting themselves; maybe luck is no more than finding a silver lining.”
